The Secret to Washing Your Hair Without Breakage
Natural hair looks beautiful, but maintaining it can be a challenge. It takes a lot of care to maintain healthy locks. Keeping your ends healthy and your scalp clean is a delicate balance. Here are some tips to help you get started with healthy washing without breakage.
Use Lukewarm Water
Hot water can dry out strands and make them more susceptible to breakage. While washing hair with a natural shampoo, use lukewarm or cool water during the wash and rinse process. A shower filter can remove impurities and excess minerals, especially if you are in an area with hard water. As you wet your hair and rinse out shampoo and conditioner, rinse as thoroughly as possible to make products easier to apply and remove residue.
Apply Conditioner
Conditioner not only makes hair more manageable and easier to comb, but it can protect your strands from breakage. Look for conditioners that do not contain alcohol to prevent dryness. After washing your hair, gently squeeze out the water. Apply conditioner and leave for at least two minutes before rinsing. The amount of conditioner you need depends on the length and thickness of your hair, so you may have to try different amounts to use enough to coat strands.
Change Your Drying Routine
One of the biggest causes of breakage is rubbing hair with a towel after washing. Putting hair in a turban or using a cotton t-shirt to scrunch water out of hair carefully without rubbing can reduce the friction that can damage strands. Leave your hair in the turban or t-shirt for at least 20 minutes to decrease drying time.
Invest in a Wide-Toothed Comb
To detangle strands, use a wide-toothed comb. Start from the bottom of your hair and detangle a section at a time before moving higher on your head. Those with curlier hair might have less breakage if they comb their hair while wet, while those who have straight or wavy locks may do better combing their hair after drying.
Other ways to keep your locks strong include limiting the number of times you wash your hair in one week and letting it air dry whenever possible. There are many products that you can try, but it’s important to find which one works best for you while using a gentle routine. Using natural products with quality ingredients can help you achieve better results, regardless of your hair type.
